Prominent ear is generally understood as “oversized ear”. Although it is not necessarily true. There is no difference between the ear size of a regular individual and an individual with prominent ear. Problem simply originates from the shape of ear cartilages.
Where are the Areas Creating Problem in Prominent Ear?
Problem originates from 2 locations:
- Angle between the ear and head may be wider than it is suppose to be. This makes ear appear wider externally. This appearance becomes remarkable especially when it is observed from the back.
- Curves which suppose to be at the superior segment of the ear are not formed, this causes an ironed flat ear appearance.
What does the surgery involve?
The principal aim of the prominent ear surgery is to re-shape the ear. Here, above mentioned two problems are addressed personally.
For the first problem that is a larger angle between the ear and the skull, strong sutures are placed at the junction of the ear and the skull to narrow the angle.
For the second problem, the ear is “bended” by placing strong subdermal sutures on the cartilage at the posterior side of the ear. Here, the aim is to convert the “ironed” or quietly straight look into a natural fold.
You can try what I just mentioned in front of a mirror with your hand. Push your ear back with the tip of your finger, this shows the solution for the first problem mentioned above. You can also form curves with pushing the external part of the ear and superior ear margin the same way.
How is the surgery performed?
An incision is performed just behind your ear during the surgery. I can say this does not leave any visible scar as it is right behind the ear fully. All interventions can be easily performed from here. Surgery can be performed under both general anesthesia and local anesthesia, moreover there is no suture left to be removed after the surgery. I think that it will be realistic to give 1 week for recovery after the procedure but you can be discharged on the same day and you can go outside after few days without any problems. You can probably have a shower 2-3 days after the surgery.
Is the Headband Necessary?
It can be beneficial to wear a tennis headband after this surgery for protection purposes. But I do not order this to my patients as a necessity. If you can be careful within the day and protect your ears well enough, there will be no need to wear such a band.
What is the Earliest Age for This Operation?
This is a type of aesthetic surgery that we can perform at early ages. This surgery can be performed even in primary school age. Reason of this is that the children are affected psychologically from having prominent ear sometimes.
Although the essential condition is that the child should personally request the surgery. I always speak with the children alone and inform them in detail about the procedure, the fact that this is going to hurt and there will be needles and stitches etc. I perform the surgery if they are still willing. In my opinion, this surgery should not be performed on a child who is affected by parents. Parents should also be sensitive about this subject.
