Does liposuction remove fat, and are its results permanent?

Liposuction has been used as a common, simple and effective way for body contouring. However, its usage on some other medical problems such as macromastia, obesity, gynecomastia, angiomas, lipomas, ptosis, heart disease or diabetes complications are increased, and many researches on liposuction for academic and clinical trials have been conducted. Usage of liposuction on obesity mainly depends on fat removal procedure. Fat removal procedure includes elimination of fat deposits via miniature incisions. The main advantage of fat removal with liposuction is that the method is simple, and scars are inconspicuous with fast results. After discovery of the blunt cannula liposuction technique, it became a gold standard for liposuction applications with minimized scar and blood loss.

Liposuction is not only a cosmetic surgery, and includes invasive surgery. Thus, some surgical conditions are also needed for liposuction such as ideal body weight, a good history, no serious comorbids such as vascular and health problems. It may result pain, bruising or edema after surgery. Usage of a corset or similar methods based on location of liposuction may help to shape the body after surgery.

Most of liposuction procedures do not need hospitalization, and patients may work after two days from operation. After removal of fat deposits, blood and body liquids fill the gap and thus, weight decrease may be seen after one to three months. Results of liposuction for fat removal are permanent, but weight loss is not permanent. The procedure directly removes fats from the body, and thus, it permanently removes fats. However, less physical activity compared to food intake may result fats in the other regions of the body. In other words, liposuction gives an acute solution to obesity, but permanent solution for obesity is managing food/calorie intake and physical activity balance.
